As a Senior Data Scientist in Westpac’s Enterprise Functions squad, you will lead complex and material fraud and financial-crime data science work. You will take ambiguous problems through to adoption and measured outcomes, remaining hands-on while providing technical direction, review and mentoring. Your work will span transaction monitoring, suspicious matter investigations, scams, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF), entity resolution, typology discovery and network analysis. You will combine statistical and machine-learning judgement with anomaly detection, natural language processing (NLP), Generative AI, graph analytics, neural networks and graph neural networks (GNNs). This is a senior individual-contributor role (AA Advanced Specialist), not a line-management position. You will independently lead complex or high-impact use cases, coordinate contributors and own methodological direction, evaluation integrity and delivery. Own assurance for material work across Responsible AI, Model Risk, privacy, security, record-keeping and AML/CTF. What’s the role? As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be the senior technical authority for fraud and financial-crime data science within Westpac’s Enterprise Functions squad. Lead or sponsor dynamic graphs, embeddings, community and path analysis, GNNs and hybrid rules-plus-ML systems. Set the direction for investigation summarisation, information extraction, narrative support, typology discovery and investigator copilots. Define GenAI and agent evaluation for grounding, factuality, completeness, consistency, safety, human review, prompt injection and data-exfiltration risk. Connect model outputs to investigator queues, escalation, deferral, feedback and approved human decision rights. Sponsor champion–challenger approaches and independent challenge for material models, typologies and GenAI applications. Review high-risk models, graphs, prompts, agents, pipelines and decision policies before material release or change. Set standards for data quality, leakage prevention, temporal validation, calibration, rare-event metrics, fairness, explainability, reproducibility and documentation. Establish comparable evaluation linking technical performance to alert yield, losses prevented, investigation effort, customer impact, missed risk and control effectiveness. Ensure monitoring covers drift, graph and entity changes, typology decay, fairness, operational load and GenAI quality. Define triggers and governance for recalibration, retraining, prompt or typology changes, rollback, suspension and retirement. Lead the technical response to material model or data incidents and embed systemic lessons into standards and controls. Lead Responsible AI, Model Risk, privacy, security, AML/CTF, records-management and audit assurance. Act as senior technical counterpart to legal, compliance and second-line partners; provide credible governance, regulatory and audit evidence within delegated authority. Set review standards, coach Senior Data Scientists towards Lead-level authority and build communities across science, investigation, engineering and assurance. Lead targeted horizon scanning and experimentation in adaptive anomaly detection, multimodal and agentic AI, temporal graphs and GNNs. Adopt new methods only with evidence of material advantage and represent the squad and craft in senior technical, risk and professional forums. What do I need? Deep, sustained expertise in advanced analytics, statistics and machine learning, with evidence of technical leadership across multiple consequential production use cases. Advanced-to-Mastery depth in at least one fraud or financial-crime analytical specialism, with Advanced breadth across several areas: anomaly and behavioural detection; temporal network science, graph embeddings and GNNs; entity resolution; NLP, information retrieval and GenAI; neural networks and sequence modelling; or decision policy and human-in-the-loop design. Expert command of rare-event evaluation, temporal validation, uncertainty, calibration, model and graph explainability, champion–challenger testing and translating performance into decisions. Ability to assess interactions among data, models, rules, prompts, investigators, capacity and controls. Strong working knowledge of production AI architecture, MLOps/LLMOps, monitoring, observability, controlled release, reliability and lifecycle governance. A record of establishing standards, assuring others’ work and resolving methodological disputes with evidence. Deep understanding of fraud and financial-crime detection and investigation, including transaction monitoring, scams, AML/CTF, suspicious matter investigations, typologies, red flags, entity risk and network behavioural. Extensive experience leading fraud and financial-crime solutions or portfolios in a large, complex organisation at a scale comparable to Westpac, such as major financial services, telecommunications or a similarly regulated enterprise. Strong understanding of criminal adaptation, data and label limitations, investigator workflows, false-positive burden, customer friction, vulnerable-customer impacts and operational control design. Advanced understanding of Responsible AI, Model Risk, privacy, AI security, auditability, AML/CTF and AUSTRAC expectations. Demonstrated capability to represent Westpac with external regulators, within delegated authority, explaining methods, evidence, limitations, controls and remediation. You’ll report to the CTO and work directly with the founding team, product, design, engineering and early design partners. You’ll help decide which problems the company should solve, what information the product needs and how raw monetisation data becomes a recommendation a customer can understand and act on. You’ll shape the question, define the data, analyse the opportunity, develop a recommendation, design the experiment and help turn the answer into a product experience. Day one won’t come with a giant proprietary dataset or a mature data function. You’ll need to work out how to deliver useful intelligence to early customers using individual merchant data, external benchmarks, market signals, thoughtful rules and tested assumptions. You’ll also build the foundations underneath it. That includes creating reliable visibility into merchant usage, health and adoption, and structuring billing and payment data so it can flow into the intelligence layer. As the customer base grows, you’ll help evolve that intelligence from rules and heuristics into more adaptive recommendations. Eventually, these systems will be able to recommend, test or act on a customer’s behalf. That ambiguity is part of the job. You might investigate why paid retention is under performing in a new market, whether a local payment method would improve conversion, which customers should see a different package, or how payment routing should respond to performance, cost, geography and payment-method signals. The goal isn’t technical sophistication for its own sake. It is giving software businesses credible evidence they can use to make better commercial decisions. You’ll care about statistical rigour because customers will make real decisions based on your work. You’ll care about data quality because weak evidence creates weak recommendations. And you’ll care about product design because even the best analysis is useless if nobody understands or trusts it. Senior Data Scientist (Computer Vision) » Australia - A genuinely interesting opportunity has come up to join a rapidly scaling start-up working on advanced computer vision, machine learning and high-performance video systems. They're looking for a Senior Data Scientist specialising in Computer Vision & Object-Tracking to join as a foundational hire. You'll take ownership of applied research and modelling while helping shape the technical direction and wider team as the capability grows over the next 12–18 months. This isn't traditional Data Science. Data Scientist, Network Fabric Engineering » Sydney, Sydney Region - AWS Networking operates one of the largest and most complex networks on the planet. The team you'd join is responsible for the availability of that network — measuring how it performs for customers, predicting where it is most likely to degrade, and reshaping how we operate it as the workload grows. We are in the middle of a significant change in how network operations are run. Lessons from our recent work on automation, AI, and ML — including agentic systems that triage and mitigate incidents alongside engineers — are feeding into a broader rethink of where humans focus, where automation takes over, and how we measure whether either is working. We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the team in Sydney to drive the data science strategy behind that change. You will define the metrics that matter, own the evidence the team uses to make decisions, and measure whether each decision delivered the outcomes we expected. You'll be the data science voice on a team of senior network and software engineers — the person who decides what we measure, how we measure it, and what the numbers actually mean.
