New South Wales, Australia Adzuna Australia

About the role

The Central Coast is one of Australia’s ten largest urban areas: a region of more than 350,000 people, 1,680 square kilometres and 80 kilometres of coastline between Sydney and Newcastle, projected to grow to some 415,000 residents by 2046. Central Coast Council is the organisation that serves it. With an operating budget of $850 million a year, a four year capital works program of more than $1.35 billion, a multibillion dollar asset base and responsibility for the region’s water supply and sewerage services, it is one of the largest and most consequential councils in the country, and the scale of its operations is matched by very few outside the capital cities. Following the retirement of a long serving and highly regarded Chief Executive Officer, the elected Council is seeking a leader of genuine stature for one of the most significant and high-profile local government appointments in Australia. The financial recovery is complete, the organisation is stable and well governed, and the Council is now looking for a Chief Executive Officer who will build on that platform with ambition: lifting performance, sharpening delivery and deepening Council’s connection with the community it serves. The Role Reporting to the governing body of the Council as general manager under the Local Government Act 1993, the Chief Executive Officer holds full accountability for the leadership, performance and culture of the organisation. You will lead an Executive Leadership Team of five Directors spanning Community and Recreation Services, Corporate Services, Environment and Planning, Infrastructure Services, and Water and Sewer, and you will be the principal source of strategic, impartial and evidence-based advice to the Mayor and Councillors. The agenda is substantial. Council expects its next Chief Executive Officer to protect and extend its financial sustainability; to provide confident oversight of a regulated water and sewer utility; to pursue economic development and well planned growth actively; and to lead a culture in which people are empowered, accountable and encouraged to challenge the status quo. About You You are an accomplished chief executive or senior executive with a record of leading large, complex and multi-disciplinary organisations, most likely within local government or a comparable public sector or regulated environment. You bring highly developed financial acumen, deep fluency in governance and risk, and demonstrated success in leading cultural change and building high performing executive teams. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline are essential; postgraduate study and experience with water and sewer or another regulated utility are desirable. Just as important is how you lead. The Council is seeking a leader who builds trusted and productive relationships with every Councillor and provides consistent, professional advice that the whole elected body can rely on; who is candid and constructive, and comfortable offering a considered view on difficult questions; who is conciliatory, collaborative and innovative in equal measure; and who is a visible and trusted presence in the community that they serve. Why This Role There are few appointments in Australian local government that combine this scale, this complexity and this visibility. The Central Coast is a region of national significance with a growth trajectory to match, and its Council operates at a scale, and across a breadth of functions, that most councils never approach. For a chief executive who wants to lead an organisation of true consequence, shape the future of a major Australian region and be judged on outcomes that matter to hundreds of thousands of people, this is a defining career appointment. An executive remuneration package commensurate with the scale and significance of the role will be negotiated with the successful candidate under the Office of Local Government Standard Contract of Employment. Applications and Confidential Enquiries To access a copy of the comprehensive candidate brochure, please visit our website, locate the advertisement under the job search function, and then directly request the brochure. For a confidential discussion, please contact Gareth Broadrick, Director, Head of Government at Capstone, on [email protected]. Recruitment Timeline Closing Date: Midnight, Sunday 18 October 2026.

About the role

Coomalie Community Government Council delivers essential municipal services, infrastructure and community amenities across Batchelor, Adelaide River, Lake Bennett and surrounding rural localities in the Northern Territory. Serving residents, community groups, Indigenous communities, pastoralists and regional commercial operators, Council is entering an important period of renewal focused on financial sustainability, stronger service delivery, productive assets and renewed community confidence. Council is seeking an energetic, practical and highly visible Chief Executive Officer to lead this organisational reset and establish a strong platform for the next three years and beyond. Reporting to the Elected Council through the Council President, the CEO will be Council's principal advisor and head of administration under the Local Government Act 2019 (NT). This is a broad, influential role combining strategic, commercial, operational and ethical leadership. The CEO will help formulate and deliver Council's next five-year strategic plan, long-term financial plan and annual municipal plans, while ensuring Council resolutions are implemented prudently and transparently. As the vital link between Elected Members and staff, you will provide clear, objective advice, maintain appropriate governance boundaries and translate Council priorities into disciplined projects, measurable outcomes and lasting community value. A key early priority will be strengthening Council's financial position and management discipline. You will improve budgeting, cost forecasting and plain-English reporting; identify efficiencies; remove unnecessary expenditure; and actively pursue grants and external funding. With oversight of an operating budget of approximately $5.8 million, capital works programs and a workforce of around 15 to 20 employees, you will bring commercial judgement and accountability to decisions across the organisation. Leadership at Coomalie is not office-bound. You will maintain a genuine presence across the Shire's roads, drainage networks, depots, plant, public facilities and community assets. This includes strengthening project planning, inspecting works, assuring the quality of internal and contractor delivery, verifying standards and ensuring Council receives what it has paid for. You will also help guide emergency response and recovery activity during seasonal weather events, floods, fires and other natural emergencies. The CEO will monitor the ongoing value of contractor use versus in-house capability to maximise service delivery and value, while progressively building a skilled in-house workforce where appropriate. You will improve workforce stability, strengthen safety and accountability, address workplace friction promptly, and create open communication between administration, depot crews and regional field teams. Council is looking for a leader who sets practical quality standards, supports frontline staff and leads by visible example. Equally important will be your ability to rebuild trust through accessible, responsive and transparent engagement. You will engage proactively with residents, community groups, Indigenous communities and pastoralists, while building constructive relationships with government agencies and neighbouring councils and representing Coomalie at Northern Territory local government forums and ministerial meetings. Integrity, sound judgement and the confidence to navigate competing priorities will be essential. You will bring demonstrated leadership through organisational change, financial improvement or operational turnaround, supported by strong governance and stakeholder management capability. A practical understanding of civil maintenance, plant, drainage, infrastructure, assets or field operations will be highly regarded, as will experience securing grants and building workforce capability. Appropriate tertiary qualifications in business, commerce, finance, public administration, engineering or a related discipline are preferred, although substantial equivalent executive experience will also be considered. A current unrestricted Australian driver's licence and the ability to obtain the required statutory clearances are essential.
